Plants gain a lot of benefits when they are regularly and properly fertilized. For one, fertilizers help boost the plant’s growth. Nitrogen, a usual component of most types of fertilizers, is considered as a growth booster and a greening agent. Fertilizers are also help boost the maturation and enhance the resistance of plants.

Some Items You Can Use As Fertilizers

Most property owners usually use store-brought fertilizers to apply on their lawns or plants. However, did you know there are some unique items that you may already have in your home that you can use as a fertilizer? These items include the following:

Powdered milk - Powdered milk is good for human consumption but also for plants as well.  Its calcium content can help give the plants nourishment needed for their growth.

Eggshells - Eggshells are a good source of calcium. To be effective, the shells must be dried and crushed before applied on the soil.  You can also consider adding eggshells to your watering can.  Let the water sit for a while before using this to water your plants.  This will give the calcium time to properly seep into the water.

Cooking water - Various nutrients are released into the water that food is cooked in.  Water that you used to boil potatoes, vegetables, eggs, and even pasta can be used as a fertilizer.  However, make sure to let the water cool before pouring this on your plants or on your lawn.

Matches - The traditional strike matches are a great source of magnesium.  Place the whole match in the hole with the plant or soak the matches in water to use as a fertilizer.  The magnesium will then dissolve into the water and make application easier.
