Early Beginnings
Life Fitness began when the Lifecycle exercise bike was invented by Dr. Keene Dimick, a chemist, in the 1960s. His desire to improve the effectiveness of his exercise routine was the force behind Dr. Dimick’s invention of this exercise equipment by. The Lifecycle exercise bike is credited as the first electronic piece of exercise equipment.
In 1984, Lifecycle, Inc. was bought by the Bally Manufacturing Corp. The brand was later renamed Life Fitness, Inc. In the 80’s, Lifecycle exercise bikes that were made specifically for homes, were later introduced in the market.
Life Fitness, Inc. expanded their products in 1991 by introducing the Life Fitness treadmill. In 1993, the company opened the Life Fitness Academy – the training and education division of Life Fitness.
In 1997, Life Fitness became part of the Brunswick Corporation.
The company celebrated a milestone in 2001 when the 500,000th Lifecycle bike was manufactured. 6 years after, in 2007, the company creates and introduces the Elevation Series – the first cardio workout equipment that boasts of iPod compatibility.
In 2011, Augie’s Quest Limited Edition Lifecycle was introduced to the market to help raise awareness and funds for ALS research.
