Did you know that immigration to Canada can be traced back
to as early as the 19th century? And Canada celebrated this year its one
hundred fifty years of immigration.
The first immigrants were known to be farmers
mostly from the US or Britain since the government needed labor force for the
agricultural industry.
History will also show you that most immigrants to Canada in
the earlier years come from refugees. In fact, 138,000 Jews were recorded to
have moved to Canada from 1900 to 1921 to escape persecution and discrimination.
The greatest number of immigrants ever recorded is 400,000
in 1913. And the lowest number, which was less than 34,000, happened in 1930s
during the Great Depression.
Nowadays, immigrants
to Canada are categorized into four –
- the family immigrants
- the economic immigrants - the skilled workers and the business people
- the refugees and
- others – people who are accepted for humanitarian reasons
Permanent immigrants greatly come from the
Peoples Republic of China and India. And the top source of non-permanent
residents working in Canada comes from the Philippines.
