The Romans are known to be one of the first civilizations to bathe. Starting in about 500 BC, Roman citizens were encouraged to bathe daily as there were many public bathtubs available for use. The public baths, which were fairly large, were usually made of marble.

It was in 1883 that cast-iron tubs were produced when the Standard Sanitary Manufacturing Company and the Kohler Company began producing them.

Nowadays, there are many different types of bathtubs. There are luxury bathtubs that are made for bathing, recreation and relaxation. Some homes have hot tubs or spas installed.
