All About Fairy Floss

Fairy floss is one of the most popular food choices available in kids’ parties. Fairy floss is actually a form of spun sugar with some food colorings and artificial flavors. It is also commonly known as candy floss in the UK and Canada, tooth floss in South Africa and cotton candy in the US, India and in many other parts of the world.

Fairy floss is made by heating sugar until it melts. As it liquefies, it is placed in a spinning machine until it re-solidifies and forms into crystal threads. It contains mostly air in it and it looks like a big cotton in on a stick. It is said to be originated in Europe in the 19th century. This spun sugar was expensive then and only the rich ones can actually afford until the machine-spun cotton candy was invented.

The fairy floss or cotton candy machine was invented in 1897 by William Morrison, a dentist and John Wharton, a confectioner. Their machine was introduced to a wide audience at the World’s Fair in 1904 as “Fairy Floss” and was a he success.
