Top 10 Causes Of Accidents In Workplaces

Every year, there are plenty of fatal accidents related to machine and equipment operation. And a review of OSHA and MSHA Alerts & Bulletins emphasized that all of these accidents can be prevented.

Causes Of Accidents In Jobsites And How To Avoid Them

  1. Getting on and off the machine – This is considered the number one cause of injury to forklift drivers, equipment operators, and truck drivers. To prevent such, check your gloves and boots first. Also, avoid carrying items while climbing. When getting off, lower yourself in a controlled manner, refrain from jumping.
  2. Equipment loading and unloading – During loading and unloading, there is a great chance that the machine will roll-over. Hence, make sure you’re centered on the ramps – stay straight.
  3. Crowded work area – People on the ground must be away from the machine operating area. Use horn to warn people to stay back if you are ready to work. Most importantly, stop the machine when not in use.
  4. Swing radius – It is very crucial to rope off the swing radius around the machine or perhaps secure it. Consider using a spotter to keep all people clear.
  5. Operating on slopes – You must know that limits of the machine. Also, allow for surface condition and do not push it.
  6. Obstructions – Know the overhead obstruction and underground utilities like sewer, electrical lines, telecom, gas, and water. To indicate obstructions, use barrier tapes, signs, and sawhorses.
  7. Reverse motion – Operators must assure that no one is behind them before backing or performing reverse motion on anything. Before moving, always check the machine perimeter.
  8. Instability – Operators must fully understand the limitation of the equipment. Safety must always be the priority. Avoid using one machine to perform lots of functions.
  9. Lock-out – All points on a machine should be protected and identified.  Always review manufacturer’s directions for safety.
  10. Machine malfunction – Always use a seat belt as this will minimize how much you will bounce around during normal operations as well as help you control the machine in an upset situation. After all, when a piece of equipment begins to tip, your seat belt can be your lifeline.
